Today is fat Tuesday, the day Poles begin feasting on "paczki." For those who do not know paczki (pronounced punch-key) is a rich pastry that is similiar to a jelly doughnut but considerably larger in size. It's a pastry so rich in incredients and flavor that even doctors look forward this time of year so they can indulge in these tasty delights. They are traditionally made just before fasting begins for Lent. In Bay City where there is a sizeable population of Polish descendants they have become a community tradition. All of the local bakeries and a number of churches have been busy taking orders for them. The Bay City Times newspaper even featured the event on its front page yesterday and a quarter page article in the local news section. You can learn more about the heritage of this tradition and get a recipe at...... www.bellaonline.com/articles/art8536.aspGotta go and pick up my paczki!
