French emigrants were among the large ethnic emigrant groups to settle Bay City, MI. In 1850 the St. Joseph church was established largely by French emigrants living on west of the Saginaw River in an area known as "French town" (now, Banks) and those living in the village of Saginaw (now, Bay City) on the east side of the river.
