The Bay County Library System will once again ask voters for funding support to restore some of its services and operations that we lost when a millage request was defeated the last time.
The Library system has since been operating with dramatically reduce services, include several the closing of several branches and reduced days and hours of operation for those that remained open. Perhaps those most hurt are the smaller townships who being served by the system's bookmobile.
Many who voted against the previous millage requests, have expressed a variety of complaints regarding the the system which over time has hardened their position against providing funding for the library.
Some of the arguments expressed against the library include, handing of construct of new central library, library board in fighting, naming of the new central library, belief that libraries are no longer a useful resource.
Ironically, the lack of support for funding the library operations has come after the building a new central library in Bay City, which voters approved and property owners are paying a 1 mill in taxes on each year.
The millage request which still requires approval of the Bay County Board, would take in November, 2007.
