The Bay City Times has been hot on the trail of Bay County government expenditures. To date they have reported primarily on travel expenses associated with government officials and employees, leaving the read to decide if they are acceptable.
The Times has covered just about everything from questionable use of county government issued credit cards to the cost of individual meals. The Times even took the time to categorize a summary of expenses for each individual and by the major expense class where the money was used.
Travel is just one area of expenditures be brought to the attention of the public who are paying for these expenses with their tax dollars. If there are some question travel expenses, there may questionable expenses in other county operations that could be costing tax payers considerably more than would otherwise be the case under a well controlled system.
The Times is doing its job by letting us know how our tax money is being used, but are we doing enough to assure ourselves that county government is effective and efficient in spending our money?
