Bay County had the highest percentage of job losses in the nation from April 2004 to April 2005! If this doesn't shock local leaders into action, I don't know what will. About a month ago, a similar study had Michigan at the bottom of the list of states in job growth. These figures should shock local and state leaders into action. Both have been guilty of ignoring what the public now knows -- that they haven't been doing what it takes to encourage businesses to locate here. Bay City may be looking good cosmetically, but that'll come to an end when the tax base erodes away with the continue erosion of its tax base. And, tourism may be nice for merchants, it doesn't create many jobs and isn't the answer to our jobs problem. The best thing we have going has been the industrial park in Monitor township. Yet, only a few months ago the industrial park authority had to fight with the township to expand. Then, the county jumped in and threaten a law suit against the township to garnish more tax dollars from the park. This type of narrow minded interests sends the wrong message about our ability to do the work necessary to create new jobs that'll keep our kids from graduating and leaving this area for a better future. It's your future, speak to the issue then THINK about what share your comments about what can be done to make it better. Remember, government serves by the power of the electorate. Become informed and vote appropriately. For the story and related references, vist: www.bay-journal.com/utl/ml/bjm-0506.html#0622

There hasn't been much said by local officials regarding the recent statistic on Bay City leading the nation with percent of jobs lost by population from April 2004 to 2005. However, The Bay City Times isn't letting them let it slide by. This month they ran an editorial on the subject calling upon local leaders to act with urgency in finding new dynamic solutions to help create jobs that will stop this negative trend that has been festering for over 30 years. The most recent article may be read at: bay-journal.com/utl/ml/bjm-0507.html#0710If you're a citizen of Bay County, and this issue is important to you -- it would be a good idea to speak up on the issue. You can register a complaint with your township county representative or your city commissioner and call upon your neighbors to do the same. You can also post here and offer your own concerns, thoughts or suggestions on what needs to be done.
